Auchnagie was a small farm distillery in the Ballinluig area of Perthshire. Founded by farmer James Duff it went through numerous stages of ownership before falling into the hands of John Dewar & Son who dismantled it in 1912 to poor transport links to the distillery.

Notes of apple sponge, sweet malt and spice, the marriage of very rare and old Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, no added colour, not chill filtered. A modern interpretation of the legendary Auchnagie Distillery.

Auchnagie was one of several small farm distilleries in the Ballinluig area of Perthshire. All have been destroyed except Edradour and Glenturret which continue to flourish to this day. Auchnagie was founded by James Duff had a varied existence and went through numerous stages of ownership before fall into the hands of John Dewar & Son who dismantled it in 1912. When Barnard visited, Auchnagie had an output of between 19,000 and 24,000 gallons and a warehousing capacity of 40,000 gallons. The water source was the nearby Auchnagie Hills, the barley was sourced very locally and the peat came from Loch Broom.

Tasting Nose

Appearance: Pale gold. Lemon lights.

Aroma: Sweet malt in the foreground, rapidly followed by fruity notes – tinned pears – with traces of spun honey. The sweet cereal now in the background as sweet biscuit. Water introduces hemp rope and wet cardboard, but still with a fruity top-note.

Taste: Sweet to taste at bottled strength, with considerable spice across the tongue and a warming, medium-length finish. At reduced strength it is less sweet and less spicy, but remains fruity, with a trace of apple sponge and vanilla.

Comment: Pleasantly sweet and spicy, with the ‘hemp rope’ an old fashioned scent.
