About Suntory

Suntory is among the five big spirits manufacturers in the world, and Japan´s largest whisky maker with 70% market share. Founded 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, it is one of the oldest companies of the country selling alcoholic beverages. Starting as brewery and distillery, Suntory quickly grew into new areas of business. Today the company is producing everything from coffee and soft drinks to fine wines, alcopops, beer, ice cream and even flowers.

Suntory is based in Osaka. In April 2014 they announced the 13.6 billion Dollar acquisition of global spirits giant Beam Inc. (Jim Beam). Since that time also the German subsidiary operates under the name of Beam Suntory. Other famous brands like Laphroaig, Marker’s Mark, Canadian Club, Sauza Tequila or German winemaker Robert Weil are part of the Suntory group too.

Suntory´s excellent Whiskies like Yamazaki or Hibiki made the company famous far beyond Japan´s borders. Released in 1984, Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky was awarded Gold at the 2003 International Spirit Competition (ISC) in the UK, and since then is Japan´s best selling Single Malt. Suntory was also awarded as “Destiller of the Year” several times in a row. To date the company´s great whiskies have won a large number of awards. Additional boost for Suntory´s brand awareness came from Sofia Coppola´s “Lost in Translation”, with Bill Murray playing in a commercial for Hibiki 17 Years whisky. Many say with this movie, including the famous quote “For relaxing times make it Suntory time!”, Japanese Whisky boom really kicked off.
