Peter in Florence Navy Strength Gin "Peter in the Navy" (500 ml)

Peter in the Navy Gin is navy strength gin, a recipe with ancient origins. Long before it was possible to measure the alcohol by volume of a drink, the Royal Navy was faced with the problem of making sure that gunpowder remained flammable even if a barrel of gin broke in transit. In the days of cannonballs and muskets, wet gunpowder was a death sentence in battle.

The label 'Navy strength' indicated the safe spirit to be carried on Navy ships and was only affixed to barrels that passed the empirical test: after dipping a few grains of gunpowder into the gin they were set on fire. Navy measurement continued until 1890 and still, today indicates a distillate with an alcohol by volume higher than 57.15%.
